The Worst Menswear Mistakes You Can Make

You see one almost every day. Maybe on the bus to work, maybe in the pub later that night, the fact of the matter is, there’s always a man somewhere who’s committing a heinous crime against style. But fear no more, this guide is here to highlight the most serious offences so you can make sure you never slip up again.

Running Shoes and Jeans

Some men struggle to differentiate between trainers and running shoes. A pair of trainers are great to wear with a t-shirt and jeans and give you an effortless casual look, running shoes and jeans on the other hand look terrible. By running shoes, I mean the kind of shoes that come with gel soles and are usually covered in breathable mesh. They fit the bill perfectly if you’re looking to head out for a jog, but with jeans and casual wear, they just look plain wrong.

Different Coloured Shoes and Belt

If you’re wearing smart shoes, the main menswear mistake you should aim never to make is choosing a belt that doesn’t match your shoes. There are no words in the English language that can describe just how truly horrible it looks when a man wears a brown belt with black shoes, or vice versa. It’s not difficult guys:brown with brown and black with black, it instantly makes your outfit look so much better and will eliminate any lingering questions anyone may have had over your dress sense.

Suit Buttons

A suit might only have two buttons on it, but you’d be surprised how much some men can still mess up their styling. If you do have a two button suit, never (and I mean never) fasten both the buttons. Only the top button needs to be done up, having both buttons fastened on your suit jacket makes you look like a schoolboy being fitted by his mum for a new blazer. Keep one unfastened at all times and there’s no way you can go wrong.

Press to Impress

Ok, so let’s say you’ve got everything right, you’ve picked out a great outfit that you think is going to be perfect for whatever you’re doing today. But you’ve forgotten something; you haven’t ironed your shirt. This instantly puts any effort you may have put into choosing your outfit to waste; you need to make sure that your clothes are always well pressed because even the best outfit will look bad if it’s covered in creases.

Novelty Ties

Oh for the love of god! The novelty tie is definitely the most horrible menswear mistake you could possibly ever hope to make. No one has been impressed by a novelty tie in the past 20 years, literally no one. Why would you want a cartoon character on your tie? It’s hardly the hallmark of a mature man with a good sense of personal style is it? Ditch the character ties and find yourself something a bit more sensible. If you want a tie that makes a statement, a colourful spotted or striped tie does this in the right way.
